چکیده

The present study aimed to evaluate xylitol’s antimicrobial and anti-adherence activities on Escherichia coli (ATCC 8739) and on another clinical strain enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). In vitro minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) test and adhesion assays were performed using 0.5, 2.5 and 5.0% xylitol. It was found that xylitol did not have antimicrobial properties on these strains. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that the slides treated with xylitol had a significant reduction in the number of bacilli and the inhibition of microbial adhesion was probably the xylitol’s mechanism of action. Xylitol could be a possible alternative on the control of E.

Molecular Study of Phase Variation of Type 1 Fimbriae in Uropathogenic Escherichia coli O44 Serotypes during Touching with Solid Surfaces

Background & Aims: Type 1 fimbriae is the most common adhesion factor in urine tract infection. In this Study, presence of virulence genes in isolated strains of uropathogenic E.Coli, O serotyping and molecular detection of phase variation of type 1 fimbriae were assessed during solid surfaces exposure. Methods: Isolated E.coli from urine samples of patients were serotyped by using serologic me...

In vitro assessment of pathogenicity and virulence encoding gene profiles of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens

Background: Avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) strains have been associated with various disease conditions in avian species due to virulence attributes associated with the organism. Aims: This study was carried out to determine the in vitro pathogenic characteristics and virulence encoding genes found in E. coli strains associated with colibacillosis in chickens. Methods: Fifty-two stock...

Antagonistic Effects of Lactobacilli spp. against Ciprofloxacin-Resistant Uropathogenic Escherichia coli Strains

Background and Objectives: Recently, the use of probiotics for the treatment of Urinary Tract Infections has become more popular. The use of probiotics in therapy is useful as only a few side effects such as destruction of resistant bacteria or disturbance of the intestinal microbiota have been reported. The aim of this study was to evaluate the probiotic effects of lactic acid bacteria by co-a...

Antibacterial effects of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Thyme on enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli

Background: Because of increasing resistance to current antibiotics, many attempts have been made by the researchers to find new compounds of plant derivatives as substitute for non-effective antibiotics. This research was performed to study the antibacterial properties of aquatic and alcoholic extracts of thyme on the clinical and standard strains of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. Materi...
